It is interesting to note that the Mayan calendars did not predict that it would be the end of the world. They had merely reached the end of a set of numbers on one of them. Today we work in the decimal system where most things are formulated to the “base-10” (millimetres, grams etc.) The Mayans and others (Aztecs, Olmecs, etc.) long before them, used a “base-20” as their number system and had generated a calendar which measured in excess of 62-million years, starting from 11 August 3114 BC (working backwards using the Gregorian calendar).
